Hound trailing dates back to the 18th Century, but it wasn't until 1906 that the Hound Trailing Association was formed under the direction of Robert Jefferson, a Whitehaven man who was also part of the local tourist attraction 'The Rum Story'. Since then the sport has grown from its humble origins, though the rules have remained largely unchanged.
